Additional School Policies

1. SEARCH AND SEIZURE OF STUDENTS’ POSSESSIONS

In accordance with P.L. 1985, Chapter 198, the school administration may and probably will, from time to time, inspect student lockers, desks or other storage facilities provided for the use of students. Scent dogs may be used. Additionally, metal detectors may be used to deter the introduction of harmful devices into the schools.

2. STUDENT DRESS

All students are expected to follow the Mandatory School Uniform Policy - Pre-K through Grade 8

3. PASSES

Students are not permitted out of their class without a pass. Passes will be issued by teachers only when absolutely necessary. Teachers have the authority to refuse passes to any student who abuses the privilege.

4. SMOKING

Students are not permitted to smoke in the school building nor on the school grounds. Violation of this regulation will warrant disciplinary action.

5. PORTABLE PAGING OR TELECOMMUNICATION DEVICES

A paging or telecommunications device is a device that emits an audible signal, vibrates, displays a message, or otherwise summons or delivers and sends a communication to the possessor. Receipt or transmission shall constitute use. No student shall possess or use a portable paging or telecommunications device at any time while on school property without the consent of the Superintendent.

Violations of this policy shall be reported to the principal. The principal will meet with the student to discuss the violation. The principal shall take any action deemed appropriate. If possession of the device is contrary to New Jersey law, the device shall be turned over to the North Bergen Police Department.

A subsequent violation shall be reported to the Superintendent for appropriate disciplinary action.

6. DISTRICT SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY

The District Substance Abuse Policy is distributed throughout the school year and is available at each school for review. Any questions regarding the policy should be directed to the Student Assistance Resource Program Office at (201) 295-2818 or (201) 295-2764.

7. LUNCHROOM

Students who eat lunch in school have the option of ordering lunch from the school’s food service or bringing lunch from home. Weekly lunch menus are posted in homerooms and in the cafeteria. Copies are also available in the school office. Free and reduced price meals are available to those students who qualify. Applications for free and reduced price meals are distributed at the beginning of the school year.

The lunch period should be a pleasant time in which students relax and enjoy their mid-day meals. However, rules and regulations governing this period are expected to be followed (indoors and outdoors) under the supervision of teachers.

8. CARE OF SCHOOL PROPERTY

Students are expected to take care of the items ?that the school lets them use such as books and other equipment and materials.

All books issued are the property of the North Bergen Board of Education and are only loaned to the students. Students must treat their books with proper care and keep their books covered at all times. At the end of the school year, books must be returned in good condition. Restitution for lost or damaged books must be made, in order to successfully complete a course.

9. USE OF TELEPHONE

The school office telephones are for school business and emergency use only. Students are not permitted to use the school office telephones for personal calls. Students may use the public telephone, with the permission of a teacher or administrator, if they need to call home.

10. LOST AND FOUND

Students often misplace items, especially clothing, in school. For this reason, the use of name labels on items such as coats, hats and rain gear may help. If a student does misplace an article of clothing or any other item, he/she should report to the school office for assistance.

11. STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE

Information on student accident insurance will be available at the beginning of the school year.

12. CHANGE OF HOME ADDRESS AND/OR TELEPHONE NUMBERS

Parents must notify their child’s school office of any change in home address and/or telephone numbers. This includes home telephone numbers, business telephone numbers and emergency telephone numbers.
