Hello everyone and Happy New Year, this is Dr. George Solter, Superintendent of the North Bergen School District.   We are in January and more than halfway through the second marking period.   I have some important points of information that I would like to tell you about.

First, you have the mid-marking period reports available for you to view and determine your child’s academic progress on the Realtime Parent Portal. If you need assistance getting on the Parent Portal, please call your child's school for help. This is a time to have conversations with your child's teacher and determine ways to improve any deficiencies if they are indicated.   You can also speak with your child’s guidance counselor to discuss issues beyond any academic difficulties.   Please remember that we are working together to make sure each child can be successful.

Second, we are now into the winter sports season and we would love to see large support for our student-athletes participating in basketball, wrestling, bowling, indoor track, cheerleading, and swimming.   Each of our athletes spends a lot of time and effort to prepare for competitions as well as completing all of their academic requirements.   The schedule of the events is located on the North Bergen High School webpage where you can see the dates, times, and locations.

Third, on Monday, January 15th, we will be off from school to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.   We honor him for his commitment to nonviolent resistance and for his dream of a just society where all people are judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin. His legacy continues to inspire generations to work toward a more equitable world.

Fourth, we are coming up on the winter season where there is the possibility that we will have snow days where school will be canceled.   We will determine this based on weather reports and consultation with the North Bergen Township agencies.   Notifications of school closings will be on our website, as well as sending out automated calls, texts, and emails to your registered contact information in Realtime.   Please make sure this information is correct.  Whenever possible we usually make the determination the night before in order to allow parents and caregivers to find child care for the snow day.   Unfortunately, there may be circumstances that will not give us this advanced notification.
