Hello everyone this is Dr. George Solter, Superintendent of the North Bergen School District. We are now in the month of October and here are some important events going on at our Schools.

First, from September 15th to October 15th, we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a time to recognize the contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the American Latino community. Hispanic Americans have made significant contributions to our country in every field, from business to science to the arts.   They have enriched our lives with their vibrant cultures, traditions, and languages. This is a time to reflect on our shared values and commit to building a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

Second, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is a time to raise awareness about this disease that affects millions of people around the world.   Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women, after skin cancer.   It is also the most common cancer among women under the age of 45. Early detection is key to beating breast cancer.   That's why it's important to get regular mammograms and to know the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.   The more people who know about breast cancer, the more likely they are to get screened and to support the fight against the disease.

Third, the North Bergen Board of Education is partnering with the North Police Department for the first annual Walk and Roll to School with a Cop. Students will have a specific meeting place and will walk to their school with police officers and local officials. Each individual school will have a designated day for the walk. Please look at your school's website for more information.

Fourth, the annual North Bergen Carnival is being held in Braddock Park. On Monday, October 2nd, Tuesday, October 3rd, and Wednesday, October 4th, the carnival will have a special discount for all students who are wearing a North Bergen School shirt. The discount is for a reduced price on an unlimited ride wristband. Please make sure you get a chance to visit the carnival and enjoy the event.

Fifth, there are many after-school, weeknight, and Saturday morning programs starting in each of our schools to help with student achievement. Please look for these events posted on the school website or in notifications sent home by the school.   Additionally, there will be many parent and family activities throughout the school year. Lastly, we are still collecting lunch applications. Please complete these forms so your children can access an appropriate-priced lunch. You can go online to get the application or call your child’s school to complete a paper copy.
