Hello everyone this is Doctor George Solter, Superintendent of the North Bergen School District. I would like to discuss with you the very serious issue of school safety and security.

Recently, there have been many incidents in schools across the country. Please know that we take all aspects of safety and security very seriously. We can look at this in two ways, the physical barriers we have to protect our buildings and the way we work with information or issues.

Here are some ways we look to protect your children and the staff members by addressing both of these aspects of school safety and security.

All access doors should be locked at all times during the day or be attended by a staff member when they are open. Additionally, we have installed intercoms at the main entrance of each school where guests have to be announced. Each school has a security guard and a police officer located at the main entrance. Additionally, our security guards conduct random metal detection and address any situations or items that they may encounter. In addition to every school in our district having a police officer on duty at all times, we also have a number of detectives who are assigned to the schools. They conduct investigations and report any issues to the principal’s office as well as to my office.

When an issue arises we address that issue with an appropriate action plan. When we have a threat or issue that does arise we feel it is important to let you, the parent, know what is going on in our schools. We always want to be transparent and keep you informed and aware of any threat or incident that has occurred in our schools.

Additionally, we conduct many drills each month that include traditional fire drills, active shooter drills, external threats, hazardous material spills, and evacuations to name a few. We always want to be well-prepared when situations arise.

Lastly, we just ended the third marking period, please review your child's academic progress on the parent portal of Realtime. Also, we will be starting spring break on Thursday, April 6th and return on Monday, April 17th.   Enjoy the time off and come back rested and ready to have a strong finish to the 2022 -2023 school year.
