Hello to the parents of the North Bergen School System: My name is Steven Somick, I am the School Business Administrator for the North Bergen Board of Education and this is an update on the West Campus and other capital improvements.

The North Bergen Board of Education awarded the High School West Campus Addition and Renovation project to ALNA General Contractors at our Board Meeting on December 22.  There was a thorough review by the Boards Architect, Construction Manager, Legal Counsel and board team.  We found that ALNA’s bid packet was complete and met all the State requirements for the district to award the contract.  There were six interested general contractors who participated in the bid and the lowest most responsive and responsible bidder was awarded the contract in the amount of $39,467,000. There was a 1.5% difference between the top four bidders and the winning bid was approximately $1,088,000 less than the project cost estimate of $40,555,000 which was prepared by the district's construction price cost estimator.  At this point in time, the demolition and rehabilitation for the new school have begun.  ALNA and the district’s management team are having positive construction meetings as the work progresses.  We continue to move forward to meet our goal of student tours in the Spring of 2023 and the Building to be open for grades 7-9 in September of 2023.  I will continue to update the North Bergen community to keep everyone informed of the school's progress.

Other capital improvements taking place right now in the District include new windows being installed in the High School, as well as a new generator paid for by CARES act funding.  We are looking to bid HVAC upgrades in all the elementary schools by utilizing ESSER Federal grant money and HVAC upgrades in the High School with the bond referendum funds. Other projects to be put in the 2023 budget include a new roof and masonry repairs at McKinley School, new Interior classroom doors at Lincoln School, and Refurbished bathrooms at Franklin School.
