Hello, everyone. This is Dr. George Solter, Superintendent of the North Bergen School District. We have now completed our third week of instruction with our students in the virtual environment.  We truly appreciate everyone’s efforts including the students, parents, and teachers during this trying time.

Last March our entire school process was interrupted and we went from planning for a few weeks of instruction at home to learning in a virtual environment for the rest of the year.  While there were issues, we all worked through them to the best of our ability.  During the summer we were creating a plan to open school for the 2020 – 2021 school year.  There were many meetings of the Restart Committee discussing many different options.  I truly appreciate all of their efforts and input as we developed the plan.

I would like to give you some information about what is going on in our schools.

Our original plan was to open with a hybrid schedule where some students are in-person on Monday and Tuesday, while a second group is in-person on Thursday and Friday.  All students would be learning virtually on Wednesday.  In August Governor Murphy signed an executive order allowing schools to start with total virtual instruction.  Part of this virtual plan was that we were required to have a process in place to slowly move toward in-person education.  We then decided to work in the virtual environment until the end of the first marking period.

This September we started learning in the virtual environment through logging on to Google Meet for instruction, using Google Classroom for assignments and presentations, and teachers using other forms of communication to get messages to the students.  Our vision was to start this school year experience for students as true to in-person education as possible.  It is important to have each student form relationships with the teachers and other students in the class.

Our goal is to have a classroom teaching period look just as if we were in-person.  The teachers will introduce material, work through examples, give independent work for students to do, and then revisit the answers for discussion.  It is not about our teachers speaking and lecturing for the entire period.  We want a balanced approach that makes the best sense for learning.  Additionally, there will be days where there is no direct instruction by the teachers; they will post information for exploration and related assignments. Each September we host an open house to meet the teachers.  Unfortunately, we cannot have this event live this year so we are in the process of planning a virtual open house.  Each staff member will create a video describing the student expectations, classroom procedures, requirements for the completion of assignments, creation of projects, the evaluation of student progress, and how you, the parent, can communicate with the teacher.  The details will be posted shortly concerning how and when you can view the virtual open house.

Since the start of virtual learning it was very important that we made sure everyone had the opportunity to have access to a healthy breakfast and lunch.  We will continue to distribute them at all schools on Mondays and Thursdays from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.  If you have any issues or concerns with the food distribution please contact your principal.

We are now in the process of reevaluating the plan for students to return to in-person education.  The Restart Committee is carefully assessing all of the possible issues and when the plan is finalized we will post it on our website and I will publish a video message with all of the details.  When we return to in-person education you, as the parent, will still have the ability to keep your child in the virtual learning program.  There will be a specific procedure for this option that will be posted.
