Standards Based Report Cards (SBRC) 11/2025
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It’s hard to believe we are now in the month of November. This month, I would like to discuss and give some information on the Standard Based Report Cards (SBRC) that we use in grades K-4 in the North Bergen School District. These report cards are designed to give you a clearer, more detailed picture of what your child is learning and how they are growing in relation to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards.
What Are Standards-Based Report Cards?
A Standards-Based Report Card focuses on your child’s progress with specific skills and learning goals that are aligned to the state standards. Instead of traditional letter grades, this approach measures how well your child understands and can apply the skills expected at their grade level.
Why do we use SBRC?
This system allows teachers to:
- Provide consistent and clear information about your child’s academic progress.
- Identify and communicate both strengths and areas for growth.
- Offer instruction that is better tailored to each child’s learning needs.
- Use consistent grading practices across all classrooms and grade levels.
What Does This Mean for Students?
Standards-based grading encourages learning without the fear of failure. Early mistakes do not permanently affect a child’s grade. Instead, students are given time and opportunities to master skills over the course of the year. This creates a more supportive and emotionally safe environment that values learning and growth over test performance.
How Will My Child Be Assessed?
Each report card uses a proficiency scale to show how your child is progressing toward the grade-level standards:
- 4 – Exceeds Standards: Your child consistently demonstrates skills beyond grade-level expectations.
- 3 – Meets Standards: Your child demonstrates proficiency with grade-level expectations.
- 2 – Approaching Standards: Your child is developing skills and making progress toward expectations.
- 1 – Needs Support: Your child requires additional help to meet grade-level standards.
These numbers are not meant to compare students to each other, but to show where your child is on their learning journey.
How Can You Support Your Child?
- Review the report card and discuss a few strengths and areas for growth with your child.
- Avoid comparing standards-based levels to traditional letter grades.
- Access the proficiency scales online to better understand what each proficiency level means.
- Stay in touch with your child’s teacher for strategies to support learning at home.
Our goal with the Standards-Based Report Card is to give you a clearer understanding of your child’s academic progress and to strengthen the partnership between home and school. We believe this system will help all students reach their full potential.

¡Qué rápido pasa el tiempo! Ya estamos en noviembre. Este mes me gustaría compartir información importante sobre las Boletas de Calificaciones Basadas en Estándares (SBRC, por sus siglas en inglés) que se utilizan en los grados K–4 del Distrito Escolar de North Bergen. Estas boletas están diseñadas para ofrecerles una visión más clara, precisa y detallada del aprendizaje y progreso académico de sus hijos, de acuerdo con los Estándares de Aprendizaje Estudiantil de Nueva Jersey.
¿Qué son las Boletas de Calificaciones Basadas en Estándares?
Las boletas basadas en estándares se enfocan en el progreso de los estudiantes en habilidades específicas y objetivos de aprendizaje alineados con los estándares del estado. En lugar de usar calificaciones tradicionales con letras, este sistema muestra qué tan bien los niños comprenden y aplican las habilidades esperadas para su grado escolar.
¿Por qué usamos el Sistema de Evaluación Basada en Estándares (SBRC)?
Este sistema permite a los maestros:
- Proporcionar información clara y consistente sobre el progreso académico de su hijo/a.
- Identificar y comunicar tanto las fortalezas como las áreas que necesitan apoyo.
- Ofrecer enseñanza más personalizada según las necesidades de cada niño/a.
- Mantener prácticas de evaluación consistentes en todas las aulas y niveles escolares.
¿Qué significa esto para los estudiantes?
La evaluación basada en estándares promueve un aprendizaje más positivo y libre de estrés. Los errores iniciales no afectan de manera permanente la calificación. En cambio, los estudiantes reciben múltiples oportunidades para practicar, mejorar y demostrar lo que han aprendido a lo largo del año escolar. Esto crea un ambiente seguro, motivador y centrado en el crecimiento.
¿Cómo se evaluará a mi hijo/a?
Las boletas utilizan una escala de dominio para indicar el progreso del estudiante hacia los estándares del grado:
- 4 – Supera los estándares: Demuestra habilidades por encima de lo esperado para su grado.
- 3 – Cumple con los estándares: Demuestra dominio de las habilidades esperadas.
- 2 – Se acerca a los estándares: Está desarrollando habilidades y progresa hacia lo esperado.
- 1 – Necesita apoyo: Requiere ayuda adicional para alcanzar los estándares del grado.
¿Cómo puede apoyar a su hijo/a?
- Revise la boleta de calificaciones con su hijo/a y hable juntos sobre sus avances.
- Evite comparar estos niveles con las calificaciones tradicionales.
- Consulte las escalas de dominio disponibles en línea para comprender mejor cada nivel.
- Mantenga comunicación con el maestro/a para recibir estrategias que apoyen el aprendizaje en casa.
